Learn more about George
Supporting emerging composers is a crucial part of Psappha’s work. Each year we will designate a commission from an emerging composer as the Peter Maxwell Davies Commission.
Peter Maxwell Davies (‘Max’) was Psappha’s Patron for more than 20 years and was a staunch supporter of the ensemble. This commission in Max’s name acknowledges the contribution he made to British music and the support he gave to many hundreds if not thousands of composers and musicians during his lifetime. For 2019-20 the Peter Maxwell Davies Commission will be by George Stevenson.George plans to write a work for clarinet, flute, two violins, viola, cello and piano.Psappha will support the commission with two workshops.
Scottish composer George Stevenson has written for musicians of the Russian National Orchestra, New Russia State Symphony Orchestra, Solovey Ensemble, Psappha (through the ensemble’s Composing for Flute and Clarinet scheme), Berkeley Ensemble, Pentaèdre, Assembly Project, Brodick Quartet and Duo Palladium, as well as dancers of The Bolshoi Ballet. Other works have been commissioned by Moscow Viola Festival, Suzuki Scotland and International Flute Competition ‘Moya Lyubimaya Fleyta’.
