With Psappha Conrad Marshall, Benjamin Powell, Tim Williams and Jennifer Langridge
Since their first performance three decades ago, the musicians of Psappha have become a vital presence in this country’s new music scene. Tonight these outstanding musicians will perform The Axe Manual by Harrison Birtwistle – an extraordinary musical battle that pits the piano against an enormous range of percussion. That will be framed by Ninfea Cruttwell-Reade’s beautiful Etudes for tuned flower pots and a hypnotising ethereal recent work by Joanna Ward for solo cello. Finally, we’ll get a rare chance to hear the Hungarian cimbalom brought into the unique sound world of Simon Holt. Antonio Machado’s short, elegant poem Noviembre 1913 captures the essence of the rural Andalusian landscape that this much-loved Spanish writer called home. Composed for Psappha by acclaimed composer Simon Holt, The Sower pays homage to the poem, the poet and the land that shaped them both.
